Model Context Protocol (MCP) for Forms: How AI Agents Generate and Inspect Web Forms

By FlowForm Engineering Team••Free & Open Source (AGPLv3)

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and how does FlowForm use it?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic that allows AI agents and LLMs to securely connect to external tools and data sources. FlowForm exposes an MCP server that enables AI agents like Claude Desktop and Cursor to discover active form schemas, generate dynamic forms programmatically, and query submission records using natural language.

The Paradigm Shift: From Human Dashboards to Agentic Workflows

Historically, web forms were created by human engineers and marketing coordinators clicking through visual web dashboards: dragging input fields, configuring dropdown options, and manually toggling conditional rules.

Today, autonomous AI coding assistants and agentic workflows (such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Devin, and custom enterprise LangChain agents) increasingly build, deploy, and maintain software systems. When an AI agent is instructed to:

“Build a landing page for our new enterprise product with a 3-step customer qualification form that sends notification webhooks to our Slack channel,”

the agent should not be forced to simulate human browser clicks or navigate closed SaaS dashboards. The agent requires machine-readable contracts, structured API endpoints, and native tool definitions.

FlowForm MCP Architecture: Tools for Autonomous Agents

FlowForm provides a native MCP server (flowform mcp:serve or SSE transport at /api/v1/mcp/sse) that exposes four high-level tools to any MCP-compatible AI client:

[ AI Assistant (Claude / Cursor) ]
              │  (JSON-RPC / stdio or SSE)
              ▼
   [ FlowForm MCP Server ]
   ├── list_forms (Discovers active forms and endpoints)
   ├── get_form_schema (Inspects fields, validation rules & steps)
   ├── create_form        (Generates dynamic forms & wizards)
   └── export_submissions (Retrieves filtered, anonymized responses)
              │
              ▼
    [ FlowForm REST Engine ]

1. list_forms

Allows the agent to inventory all active forms across Mode 1 (headless endpoints) and Mode 2 (dynamic wizards) to check if an appropriate form already exists.

2. get_form_schema

Returns the complete JSON Schema definition for any form, including validation rules (email, min:5, regex), options, and conditional branching logic jumps.

3. create_form

Allows an AI agent to programmatically author a new form. An agent can translate a natural language prompt (“Create a vendor security intake form with company name, domain, SOC2 report upload, and compliance contact”) directly into a valid FlowForm JSON Schema, register the form, and return the live endpoint URL in seconds.

4. export_submissions

Enables agents to query submission records, generate statistical summaries, or trigger downstream CRM workflows without manual CSV exports.

Configuring FlowForm in Claude Desktop

Integrating FlowForm with Claude Desktop takes four lines of JSON configuration in claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "flowform": {
      "command": "docker",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "-i",
        "--rm",
        "-e", "FLOWFORM_URL=https://demo.flowformhq.com",
        "-e", "FLOWFORM_API_TOKEN=your_sanctum_bearer_token",
        "flowformhq/flowform-mcp:latest"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Once configured, Claude can interact with FlowForm directly:

User: “Claude, inspect our customer intake form on FlowForm and tell me how many submissions we received from healthcare companies this week.”

Claude: “I called export_submissions for form ‘enterprise-intake’. You received 42 submissions this week, of which 18 selected ‘Healthcare’ as their primary industry. Here is the breakdown…”

Machine Discoverability: OpenAPI 3.1 & llms.txt

Beyond MCP, FlowForm adheres strictly to machine discoverability standards:

Conclusion

As AI agents become primary consumers and operators of web infrastructure, platforms that rely exclusively on human visual dashboards will face obsolescence.

FlowForm bridges the gap between traditional human administration (via our Filament 5 dashboard) and autonomous agent orchestration (via the Model Context Protocol and OpenAPI). Whether you are an engineer writing code by hand or directing an AI agent to build your product, FlowForm is built for the agentic future.
